Betting on Wimbledon Mens Champion
Author: Robert Palmer
If you are betting on this year's Mens Champion at Wimbledon you will find that the odds on Andy Murrray have suddenly shortened following his victory at Queens. Although Federer remains the bookies favourite, Murray is only slightly behind him and ahead of Nadal.
This trio is way above all the other contenders with over double the odds being offered on the fourth favourite N.Djokovic and over four times the odds for the fifth favourite Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. If you enjoy sports betting on outsiders, now is a good time to get your wager in, with odds of over 1,000 to one being available on a number of players.
Although it is not at all unusual for the winner at Queens to go on to win Wimbledon, it is by no means certain that this will be the case this year. Murray will certainly have his work cut out if he is to become the first British player to win the championship since Fred Perry took the trophy for the third time in 1936.
Although Murray is certainly one of the best tennis players to emerge from Great Britain in recent years, he has yet to get the English crowd at Wimbledon behind him. Although Tim Henman, the previous favourite of the Wimbledon crowd, failed to win the championship he always had a tremendous following and those who were unable to watch his matches live would gather round the so-called Henman Hill to voice their support.
Perhaps the reason for Murray's failure to get the crowds behind him stems from his less than outgoing personality. Although he always gives post-match interviews it often seems that he resents doing so, and he certainly does not appear to enjoy his celebrity status. Another possible reason is that many English people feel a little resentful over Murray's attitude towards English football and his statement that he supports any football team that is playing England. Of course, this could have been a joke but many people have taken it seriously.
Whilst any of the top seeds, Murray, Federer and Nada, look likely to take the championship, betting on the fourth and fifth seeds, Djokovic and Tsonga, could be a decent strategy given the long odds that are available.

Wimbledon like many major sporting events is another opportunity for the bookies and gamblers to make money through a bet. A number of companies offer online betting, Bwin being one of many.
